During Lent, we are hearing stories of encounters with Jesus in the Gospel of John. This morning’s account of Jesus and the unnamed “woman at the well,” is the longest conversation between Jesus and another person in all of the Gospels. In this dialogue Jesus and the woman both learn about the other in ways that help us better know ourselves.

At the well Jesus behaves very much like—well, very much like Jesus. He violates all the usual social rules. He talks with a woman. He talks with a Samaritan. From the beginning to the end of this story, Jesus transcends conventional expectations and challenges the status quo. He shows a love for all people.
