MAUNDY THURSDAY WORSHIP SERVICE

Each year someone asks, “What is Maundy Thursday?” Maundy comes from an Old English word that mean “Mandate.” It recalls Jesus eating with his disciples before his arrest and telling them, “A new commandment I give to you—that you love one another as I have loved you.” On Maundy Thursday we remember how that commandment and that meal shape our life together. We share in the Lord’s Supper—the feast of the resurrection. Then the mood of the service changes as we recount the betrayal, arrest, and trial of Jesus and the darkness in the sanctuary grows. This is the service of Tennebrae, a Latin word that means shadows. The Maundy Thursday service is appropriate even for older children and there will be child care available for the younger children in our congregation.
