Prince Rivers, who teaches down at Duke Divinity School, recently wrote that “For some pastors, talking about money is uncomfortable. We don’t want people to think we are begging from the pulpit. We don’t want visitors and new members to think the church is ‘all about money.’”
Of course, if you’ve been around here for any length of time, you know that I’m generally unashamed in my preaching about giving. I actually like stewardship season. I enjoy preaching stewardship sermons. I am glad to announce the good news of the abundant love that God rains down upon us and the fruits that grow from our giving. I agree with the person who said, “There is only one thing better than raising money for the Realm of God and that is spending money for the Realm of God.”
So, it’s a great time of year. This congregation knows about giving.
So, this morning, instead of encouraging you to give, I want to encourage you to develop a gift that you already have within you—the gift of generosity. It is a gift that you have known and a gift that you have been shown.
I want to encourage you to grow in generosity.
