There’s a passage in Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises in which a character named Mike is asked how he went bankrupt. “Two ways,” he answers. “Gradually, then suddenly.” Democracies, we are told, do not collapse suddenly, but slowly, bit by bit. This morning, through the wisdom of Proverbs and Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we’ll explore how people of faith can continue to support and strengthen our civic institutions in these days when erosion seems so strong.
