Many say we are living in a time when virtue seems to be lacking. How can recover the good and be agents for what is right in our personal lives and in the larger world? This morning we continue our exploration of some new virtues and how they help in our changing times.

Today we’ll consider sacrifice. Nike’s new ad campaign encourages people: “Believe in something…even if it means sacrificing everything.” People have extolled and praised this ad; people have disparaged and mocked it. But it is a good starting point for us to consider what it means to give something—everything—up for a greater good and what that greater good might be.
