A while ago, I was thinking about my preaching for the weeks ahead and it all seemed a little overwhelming. Our nation and our world are veering toward authoritarianism; trust in our government and our institutions continues to fall; abuses of power seem to grow daily; rights are threatened; basic human decency is lacking—all issues of gigantic proportion and of gigantic importance.
Then, of course, last Wednesday brought the shooting of Charlie Kirk—another college campus joining the University of Iowa and so many others on the list of campus that have experienced gun violence. Before the killer surrendered, the rhetoric quickly grew heated, with calls for retribution coming from the president on down.
These are days when we long for the consolation of God, days when we are scared by the seeming insignificance of life, days when the reality of the condition of our nation, our world can frighten us.
How will we as people of liberal faith deal with these large issues. How will we see our way through these days? We find some unexpected help in an ancient story of the Hebrew people in a land of giants and of an attempted healing that doesn’t seem to work.
